Orthopedic Surgery Residency Application

Applicants with one of the following qualifications are eligible for appointment to a residency training program:

1. Graduates of medical schools in the United States and Canada accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME), who have also met the osteopathic requirements designated by the institution:
   
   • At least 20 business days prior to the Match, the applicant must have the following ready for submission:
     
     • Completion of 60 hours of OSU-COM Years 1 and 2 coursework, including OMM I, II, III, and IV.
       
     • The Teaching Guide for Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine and lectures may be used to direct the lab portion. A certificate of completion will be provided. OMM education from outside institutions will not be accepted.
       
     • Verification that the candidate completed the CORRE examination with a passing score at or above the 10th percentile.
       
     • A letter of recommendation from a practicing D.O. included with the residency application. The letter must indicate that the applicant understands osteopathic philosophy.
       
2. During residency, residents must:
   
   • Complete 60 hours of Osteopathic Principles and Practice (OPP) Continuing Medical Education approved by OSU-CHS/OMECO through activities such as CME courses, didactics, elective rotations, and other clinically focused educational experiences.
     
   • Successfully pass an OMM basic skills competency practical examination administered by OSU-CHS faculty prior to PGY-2.
     
   • Demonstrate satisfactory progression through the Osteopathic Recognition Milestones.
     
3. Graduates of colleges of osteopathic medicine in the United States accredited by the American Osteopathic Association (AOA).
   

Residents are selected from among eligible candidates based on residency-related criteria, including preparedness and ability to succeed in the rigors of orthopedic surgery training, academic achievement, aptitude, communication skills, and personal qualities such as motivation and integrity. The program does not discriminate on the basis of gender, race, age, religion, color, national origin, disability, sexual orientation, or any other legally protected status.

Audition rotations are recommended but not required for consideration. The Orthopedic Surgery Program at OSU Center for Health Sciences participates in the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS). Applications submitted through ERAS are reviewed by the Interview Selection Committee beginning when the ERAS portal opens in mid-September.

A current National Board of Osteopathic Medical Examiners Comprehensive Osteopathic Medical Licensing Examination (COMLEX-USA) transcript and/or United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE) transcript must be included with the application.

Interviews

Interviews are typically conducted in January. Only qualified applicants will be invited to interview. Our program participates in the AOA/CORD Universal Offer Day and extends interview invitations on the date established by AOA/CORD. Following the release of interview invitations, there is a 24-hour moratorium on scheduling interviews. After the moratorium period, applicants have 48 hours to schedule their interviews. Audition Rotation

Our program does not participate in VSLO for audition rotations.

To be considered for an Ortho audition rotation, please submit your application and documentation to the Office of Clinical Education’s Visiting Medical Students page.

  • Proof of Completed Compliance Training (eg, HIPAA, ACLS/BLS, TB test, Mask fitting)
  • Letter of good standing
  • Current CV and photo

  • Proof of health insurance coverage
  • 10 panel drug screen report
  • HIPAA/BBP training certificates
  • Letter of intent for Family Medicine

Once these items have been uploaded, your file will be forwarded to the Program Coordinator and Program Director for review. An email will be sent to the student with approval or denial of their request.

ERAS Information

Applicants are accepted only through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS). Completed applications are reviewed periodically, and candidates are notified when there is sufficient information to offer an interview. Interview dates are granted to qualified candidates.

1. Complete 60 hours of OPP Continuing Medical Education, approved by the OSU-CHS/OMECO, achieved through any of the following: CME courses, didactics, elective rotations, etc., focusing on clinical application.
2. Successfully pass an OMM basic skills competency practical examination, administered by OSU-CHS faculty, prior to PGY-2.
3. Satisfactorily progress through the Osteopathic Recognition Milestones during residency.
